This is a playthrough of single player mode using Motaro in the SNES version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Read on below for more information...
Motaro is the penultimate boss of the game. He is a hidden playable character, but he can only be selected in a 2-player game, meaning that he is unavailable in a 1-player game.
===== HOW TO UNLOCK MOTARO =====
On the menu screen, input the following command:
Up, B, A, Left, Down, Y
If you've done it right, the "Kooler Stuff" option will appear. Go into this section, and switch ON the "Enable Motaro" option. He'll now be available in a 2-player game by appearing in the center dragon panel on the character select screen. Only one player can select him.
===== SPECIAL MOVES =====
-- Fireball: F, DF, D, DB, B + [HP]
-- Grab & Punch: F, F + [LP]
-- Teleport: D, U
-- Tail Sweep: B + [LK]
===== ABOUT SNES UMK3 MOTARO =====
Motaro originally appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 as the sub-boss, and is an unplayable character in most versions of MK3 and UMK3. Even using alternate methods to select the non-playable versions of him is pretty useless, as he easily froze the game if you try to control him. (you may have seen this on my channel.)
The breakthrough finally came in the SNES and Mega Drive versions of Mortal Kombat 3, where Motaro was made a genuine playable character in them, accessed within hidden options screens whereby the player would have to input a command to unlock.
This has thankfully carried onto Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, as we see here in the video.
===== GAMEPLAY & INFORMATION =====
Motaro is a very powerful character in this version of the game, and as a MK boss, he plays completely differently to the regular characters. However his large size does make him a big target, which could be considered a "weakness". Here is the information on him:
---- Surprisingly, his icon image on the fight plan screen is Shao Kahn's one! (It was correct in SNES MK3).
---- He can jump, but he does not have any attacks in the air.
---- He cannot crouch.
---- He can actually run by using the [RUN] button, this is something the CPU Motaro never uses.
---- He does not have any finishing moves, nor can finishing moves be performed on him.
---- When the CPU controls Motaro, the CPU is able to do some unorthodox low jumps and long-range type jumps. A human player Motaro cannot do this.
---- When a human player controls Motaro, there are some differences to how he operates when being hit/stunned when compared to him being controlled by the CPU. These include: being knocked over by a sweep or roundhouse; travelling higher when uppercut by the opponent; and less hitstun pushback - this makes him weaker than the CPU-controlled Motaro. He seems more "lighter" than the CPU Motaro.
---- In this revision of the game, under human control, there seems to be a glitch regarding his Grab & Punch special move - the part where he grabs the opponent also depletes life. This means that the opponent could lose over 50% of life by being caught once by the move!
---- In human vs human matches, he is always locked on his stage background (Rooftop) against the regular characters. However when against the other non-regular character Shao Kahn, he loses stage priority as he is made to appear on The Pit 3.
---- In a 2-player game, only one player can select him.
---- When you complete the game with him, he does not have an ending. Instead it just goes straight to the credits.
---- In a versus game on the character select screen, if Motaro is selected it does not go to a versus screen. Instead, it just goes to the fight straight away.
===== ABOUT SNES UMK3 =====
The game is developed by Avalanche Software. As this uses the same code from Sculptured Software's previous port (MK3) on the same size cartridge size (32Mbit), it meant that many cuts had to be made, some of which as follows:
---- The character Sheeva is removed.
---- Most of the original MK3 stages were removed, only The Pit 3 and Rooftop remains. All 5 UMK3 unique stages are in the game.
---- The announcer voices for the character's names are removed.
---- The Animalities are removed. However the Mercy feature is still intact.
However, there were some extras/improvements over the original Arcade UMK3:
---- Rain and Noob Saibot are added to the playable roster.
---- Mileena, Ermac and Classic Sub-Zero are available from the start and are regular characters.
----- Brutalities (from Mortal Kombat Trilogy) were added to the game.
