** Apologies in advance for my nonlinear workflow, random philosophical tangents, and sometimes barely coherent trains of thought. Note to self: Try to record future tutorials no more than 40 hours since last sleep cycle. :-P **
This video covers a few key techniques that I have been using in every track I've worked on recently, and which have drastically improved the overall polish of my tracks, in addition to reducing the time it takes me to make them.
The first technique covered is the Instrument Multi-Rack in Ableton Live. I demonstrate my process for putting together a multifaceted, highly dynamic bass patch using two instances of Native Instruments Massive for texture and body, and an instance of Operator for sub rumble.
The second technique covered is my cutting edge experiment with phase modulation that produces a very distinct "wobble" sound, but without using ANY filters or Modern Talking. After listening to a lot of West Coast IDM recently, I've felt inspired to create custom sounds that are highly dynamic and easily manipulated, yet warm and organic in texture.
I'll walk you through the basics of setting up the patch in Massive, and as a bonus, you'll get to observe a brand new technique in action - Hint: It involves generating an audio signal (a carrier wave, if you will), feeding that into a free 3rd party plugin which converts audio amplitude readings into MIDI CC messages, and then modulating other instruments within Ableton Live by harnessing that input.
Lots of great stuff in this video, folks. Hope you enjoy!
