Donald Trump became only the third US president to be impeached by the House of Representatives after Johnson and Clinton.

In a historic vote mostly divided by party lines, the House impeached the president for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The articles of impeachment will now go the Senate for trial, which is set to take place in the new year.

President Trump is likely to be acquitted by the Republican-controlled chamber, but the mark of impeachment could have an impact on his 2020 re-election campaign.
