The contrast between the modern buildings and the traditional shrine and bar area will be very interesting.
We hope you enjoy this video and get a feel for this historic city.
Hanazono Shrine
Located in the center of Shinjuku, it has been enshrined as the guardian deity of Shinjuku since the establishment of Naito Shinjuku in the Edo period. The shrine is also known for its role in the culture of Shinjuku, with various theatrical troupes holding regular events on its grounds. The shrine's brightly painted vermilion pavilion is used not only by worshippers, but also as a place to rest and meet others, and the shrine is never empty of people.
The history of the shrine's founding is unknown, but it existed in 1590 when Ieyasu Tokugawa entered Edo (present-day Tokyo).
Golden Gai
Golden Gai is a bar area located in Kabukicho 1-chome, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. Nearly 300 bars, including snack bars, line the streets in barracks.
Since the 1950s, the area has been densely populated with brothels.
The area was controlled by law, and the site was transformed into a bar area around 1960.
The area is a narrow strip of low-rise wooden row houses, and more than 200 small restaurants and bars are clustered in the area. In the past, there were many unique establishments such as literary bars, which were known for attracting many cultural figures such as writers, editors, film directors, and actors as regular customers. Against this backdrop, the area has become one of Tokyo's centers of subculture and underground art.
At one time, the area became like a ghost town due to soaring land prices and stagnant customer traffic. In the 2000s, new restaurants began to open one after another, and the number of customers returned, bringing the area back to life again. In recent years, the city has become known for attracting many tourists from Europe and other foreign countries.
