Places to see in ( Alicante - Spain ) Casco antiguo de altea
The old town of Altea is one of the jewels of the Costa Blanca, its streets trace a labyrinth of houses of an immaculate white, full of colorful plants and flowers, cobbled alleys and beautiful staircases that give the place a beautiful Mediterranean air.
In spite of the great tourist and urban development of Levantina coast, the Old Town of Altea has managed to maintain a physiognomy as attractive as before and preserve the magic that has always surrounded this part of the city. In spite of being a busy place and very visited by all the tourists that arrive to Altea , here it continues breathing in him an air of peace and tranquility.
There are many Alteas in Altea. It is the Altea marinera to the port, the Altea of the garden that looks in, the Altea of the postcards with its characteristic blue dome and its white houses of the old town. Altea la Vella to the slopes of the Sierra de Bernia, the pot of Altea and its island, and the center of Altea with its shopping area, banks and town hall.
You can walk many Alteas in an afternoon walk, but my recommendation is to stay longer and explore its charming and Mediterranean corners. One of the options is to start in the center of Altea where you will find a crossroads of traffic lights and a square with a small church, which was a former Franciscan convent.
In the surroundings of this square is the most modern and active part in the commercial hours, the municipal market and the town hall. From this square starts the ascent to the old town with two possible itineraries: the Costera del Mestre de la Música or Pont de Moncau street.
The first is a staircase between whitewashed houses that will take you to the viewpoint of the roundabout, and from there to the church square, passing through La Plaça de L'Aigua, with the remains of a cistern from the last stage of the Middle Ages, and that in summer becomes the scene of concerts.
If you choose the climb up the street Pont de Moncau, you will find on your right the neighborhood of Bellaguarda. This is a beautiful and quite unknown neighborhood that has in its place the reconstruction of an old lookout tower and also conserves a piece of the old wall.
The Pont de Moncau street ends at a crossroads of streets known as the Plaza de la Cruz. To the left, the Cuesta de los Machos begins where the Eberhard Schlotter Foundation is located , always with interesting exhibitions, and the Portal Vell. Here we can clearly see that we are in an old walled enclosure: we have reached the old town.
