Top government official in Canada, just confirmed that Canada is talking with Tesla (TSLA), along with other automakers, about building an electric vehicle factory in the country.
Francois-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s industry and innovation minister, confirmed that the government is talking to Tesla about the automaker establishing a factory in the country.
He said when asked about Tesla building a factory (via Reuters):
“Yes, I’m talking to them,” Champagne said, in response to a question about reports of Tesla looking to build a factory in Canada. “I’m talking also to all the automakers around the world.”
Note that while Champagne confirms that Canada is talking also with other car makers, Tesla is singled out.
In my previous report about the location of Tesla Gigafactory in Canada, I said it may be in Quebec because we saw a job posting in Tesla’s website, looking for a “high volume” recuirters in Quebec. Thus, I alluded that Tesla has already zeroed in Quebec and already looking for high volume recruiters for its Gigafactory in Canada. We didn’t see a similar job posting for Ontario, but we did see similar job postings right before Tesla announced Giga Berlin and Gigafactory Texas.
So, is Tesla interested in Quebec? Listen what Quebec’s Ministry of Economy’s spokesperson told the Canadian publication Le Devoir by email around Agustu 10. He said “We are in discussion with most of the international players in the electric transport sector. We have nothing specific to disclose,” said Mathieu St-Amand, spokesperson for the office of Quebec Minister of Economy and Innovation, Pierre Fitzgibbon, by email.
Asked whether the federal government was involved in the steps concerning the possible installation of a factory in Canada, the federal ministry of Innovation, Science and Industry contented itself with confirming that it had held a meeting recently, in June, with representatives of the company - without specifying the exact content of this meeting.
“It is good to see that our government's investments are attracting the attention of automakers and businesses around the world. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that Canadians can benefit from the global transition to electric vehicles,” ministry spokesperson Laurie Bouchard said by email.
