In 1979 the Southern Ry wanted to replace the old Spencer yard, so in 1974 the Southern bought land in Linwood where they constructed a large 4 and one half mile long, 275 acre hump yard, which is still in service to this day with NS. But there was a problem, The Yadkin river was on the left and a swamp at the right and there was no room to build a wye. To solve this trains run long hood forward to the old Spencer yard the lead engine is turned and then the train starts its journey.
