There are two minars (view towers)at both ends of main dike of Hirakud Dam - at Burla side (south-western,)Jawahar Minar and at Hirakud side (north-eastern)Gandhi Minar.

Jawahar Minar, named after India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, stands near the dam's main site. The Minar has a plaque in memory to all the workers who lost their lives during its construction. Jawahar Minar provides scenic views of the dam, the forests and the huge lake. Sunrise and sunsets are a treat to the eyes from the Minar.

Hirakud dam in Orissa is the largest earthen dam in the world. It is a composite structure of earth, concrete and stone. The reservoir was built on Mahanadi River and located about 15 km upstream of Sambalpur, town.
