ThinkOlio presents an exploration of the philosophical roots of our problematic relationship with the natural world, led by Baruch College’s Manuel Rodeiro.
Environmental degradation is one of the 21st century’s most pressing concerns. Our unsustainable relationship with Nature is fueled by a long held view in Western thought that Man is separate from Nature. This Olio provides a quick historical overview (beginning with Plato and working through the Western philosophical tradition) of the views that support this problematic relationship.
But knowing that a problem exists isn’t enough. What should be done to deal with it? Currently, the environmental literature is divided on how to best conceptualize the notion of responsibility in environmental crises. Rodiero weighs two competing schools of thought, the Anthropic stance and the Environmental Justice stance, to arrive at a workable approach to discharging our responsibility for environmental harms.
Manuel Rodeiro teaches in the Philosophy department at Baruch College. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in Philosophy at CUNY Graduate Center and received a JD from Fordham University School of Law. He specializes in socio-political, ethical, and legal philosophy.
