I noticed some people really hunting for GOOD S-Video cables for the Nintendo 64. People really searching near and far for the cables. I asked why it's so hard to find S-Video cables for the N64 and then I was introduced to this rabbit hole.
Manufacturers figured out pretty quickly in the 90s that they could just pipe the composite signal down an S-Video cable and get KINDA OK video from it. No, not even close to as sharp as S-Video should be. In fact, it would end up worse than composite some of the time. But hey, it was the 90s and early 2000s, who was really checking?
Due to this, many of the S-Video cables for consoles such as the N64, Gamecube, Wii, Dreamcast, and more are absolutely terrible. They are actually worse the composite, some how. They all introduce artifacts, wrong colors, wrong luma, and a host of other issues. Sadly, many people have not caught this and even popular manufacturers like Retrobit are releasing cables that are not properly transmitting s-video data.
If you know of any GOOD svideo cables for these older consoles please leave them in the comments!
