This word HYDROCARBON is a combination of two words: Hydro for hydrogen and Carbon for carbon.
So hydrocarbons are defined as organic compounds that contain ONLY hydrogen and carbon atoms only. If you forget the word ONLY your definition will be wrong. You will see later why I say that.
They are saturated: These are hydrocarbons that contain ONLY single bonds. Saturated compounds are also compounds in which there are no multiple bonds between Carbon atoms in their hydrocarbon chains
Let me give you a good example of saturated. You have made tea before. If you add 10 teaspoons of sugar in your small cup of tea, and you try to make all of the sugar to dissolve, you will discover that after stirring for a quite some time, not all sugar will dissolve. If you add an extra spoon again, that sugar just sinks to the bottom. We say the cup/tea is saturated with sugar. It means there is more than enough sugar that adding more does not change anything. So alkanes are also said to be saturated meaning we cannot add more hydrogen atoms (remember hydrocabons-hydrogen and carbon only). It occurs when ONLY single bonds are present. The opposite of this is unsaturated.
Unsaturated compounds: Compounds with one or more multiple bonds between Carbon atoms in their hydrocarbon chains. These are hydrocarbons that contain a double or triple bond between two carbon atoms (-C=C-) or (-C≡C-). They are hydrocarbons contain more than one bond between carbon atoms. They are hydrocarbons that contain multiple bonds between carbon atoms.
