Tragedy on the Waters: At Least 50 Dead as Boat Capsizes on Lake in Eastern Congo

A devastating boat accident has struck eastern Congo, claiming the lives of at least 50 people, according to eyewitnesses. The incident occurred on Lake Kivu, a vital transportation route for locals and goods. This tragedy is the latest in a series of boat accidents that have plagued the region, highlighting concerns over safety and regulation.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been experiencing a surge in accidents and violent attacks in recent months. In June, a similar boat accident along the Kwah River in Mai-Ndombe Province resulted in the loss of at least 86 lives. Additionally, a militia attack in western Congo in July left at least 70 people dead.

The boat, carrying passengers and cargo, departed from the city of Goma, capital of North Kivu Province, bound for the town of Kalehe. Witnesses reported that the vessel was overloaded and lacked life jackets, exacerbating the tragedy.
