South Africa is facing a literacy crisis where 8 out of 10 children lack literacy as a fundamental skill.
In a world where knowledge is power, recent literacy assessments show that only 19% of our 10-year-olds can read for meaning. This has dire implications for their future, increasing their risk of dropping out of school early and the probability of continuing intergenerational poverty. The current Presidential goal is for “All South African children being able to read for meaning by age 10 by 2030.”. However, at the current trajectory, it will take 86 years to reach 95% literacy in SA. The year will be 2108.
