Meet Jennifer Uchechukwu Obiorah, a Top 50 finalist for the #GlobalStudentPrize 2024 🏆!
🇳🇬 Driven by personal loss and her participation in the Trash To Cash Challenge 2022, Jennifer was inspired to found TeamUpcyclers, transforming waste into wealth. Her organization has empowered marginalized communities by training 5,000 students, reintegrating out-of-school children, and funding recycling businesses across Anambra State and the Karon-Majigi IDP camp in Abuja, Nigeria.
🌍 Jennifer’s ambitious plans include installing solar energy in IDP camps, aiming to benefit 1,500 refugees and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Her work extends beyond Nigeria, fostering inclusivity and respect for all cultures by empowering predominantly Muslim and Hausa communities.
🏅 Her leadership earned her the Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award 2023 and accolades such as the Nobel Laureate for Women Empowerment and the Humanitarian Award from MasterCard Women SME Leaders.
💪 Academically, Jennifer graduated at the top of her class and secured the Learn Africa Canarias Scholarship to study climate change, as well as the Don Lavoie Fellowship given to her by George Mason University. She co-founded Communitas Scholarium, offering mentorship to over 1,500 members through academic, digital, and entrepreneurial guidance. Her TeamUpcyclers Empowerment Scheme equips IDP women with skills to convert waste into valuable products, promoting economic independence.
🌱 Jennifer tackles period poverty by teaching reusable pad creation, promotes sustainable agriculture, and educates IDPs on renewable energy. As a YOUNGO delegate and Nigeria Country Coordinator at the Global Environment Climate and Development Foundation, she leads global zero waste and climate action initiatives.
✨ If Jennifer wins the Global Student Prize, she will renovate classrooms, build toilets, and install solar energy at the Karon-Majigi Camp for Internally Displaced Persons. The project will add a computer lab and library, hire a guidance counselor, and improve education for displaced children.
