The Meghalaya government on Monday decided to take forward border talks by forming regional committees following the meeting with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma last week.
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the state Cabinet on Monday decided to form three regional committees.
“Of these regional committees, one will be for West Khasi Hills District, one for Ri-Bhoi and one for both East and West Jaintia Hills,” Sangma said.
Each committee will be headed by one of the Cabinet ministers and other members will include local MLAs or Members of District Council (MDCs) and other stakeholders.
Sangma said the inter-state border issue was discussed during the recent meeting of all Northeast chief ministers with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 24.
“All these matters were briefed to the Cabinet today, and during the meeting, we also suggested and discussed how we should move forward in this situation,” said Sangma.
Once the Committees are formed, consultation with different stakeholders in those areas will be carried out. They will also make field visits and submit reports based on different issues and facts from those areas.
Sangma said these committees would also give reports directly from the ground level. At a later stage, the chief minister will start consulting with individual groups and stakeholders at his level.
“Ultimately, we will form a state-level committee and then have larger consultation with different stakeholders, be it political parties, different DCs or headmen, Syiems, civil society,” informed Sangma.
The vexed inter-state boundary row between Assam-Meghalaya has been a long-pending issue for 49 years since Meghalaya attained statehood. Many stakeholders are pinning on looking for a solution before the state celebrates its 50th statehood.
