Master Chief returns to a Covenant-occupied Earth, where he must team up with the Arbiter to stop the Covenant from activating the Ark, a Forerunner facility that can remotely fire all Halo installations, effectively wiping out all sentient life in the galaxy; the story unfolds as the Covenant is in civil war, with the Elites now siding with humanity against the remaining leadership under the Prophet of Truth, while also battling the parasitic Flood threat that is attempting to use the situation to its advantage.
