The all-new 2024 Lexus NX450h+ is the latest plug-in hybrid crossover from the luxury brand, combining the refinement and quality of Lexus with the efficiency and practicality of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Sharing its underpinnings with the Toyota RAV4 Prime, the NX450h+ delivers exhilarating performance and up to 38 miles of electric driving range.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood lies a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with three electric motors, two up front and one at the rear axle. Total system output is an impressive 304 horsepower and Lexus estimates a 0-60 mph time of around 6 seconds. The NX450h+ can drive in pure EV mode at speeds up to 84 mph, delivering a hushed and serene driving experience free of engine noise. Once the 18.1 kWh battery is depleted, the crossover seamlessly switches to regular hybrid operation.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers a brilliant blend of performance and efficiency. Acceleration is smooth and linear thanks to the instant torque from the electric motors. The transition between electric and hybrid driving modes is imperceptible, with the gas engine starting and stopping imperceptibly. The eCVT transmission keeps engine rpm constant under acceleration for smooth, predictable throttle response. Paddle shifters allow drivers to simulate gears for added control.
Charging and Electric Range
Lexus says drivers can expect up to 38 miles of all-electric driving from a full charge, allowing many owners to complete daily commutes gas-free. Using a 240V Level 2 charger, the 18.1 kWh battery can be replenished in around 2.5 hours. On a standard 120V household outlet, charging takes approximately 12 hours.
The NX450h+ allows drivers to preserve EV range for later use, relying on the gas engine and using the battery sparingly. However, the crossover will not recharge the battery fully on its own once depleted. Drivers must plug in to maximize electric driving range.
Ride and Handling
The NX450h+ delivers a refined ride and nimble handling thanks to its adaptive variable suspension system. The suspension firms up for improved body control in Sport mode while relaxing for a more plush ride in Eco and Normal settings. Steering is precise but could use more feedback and weight. The crossover displays moderate body lean in corners but stays composed.
Braking performance is strong and consistent, with the regenerative braking system blending seamlessly with the physical binders. Normal braking feels linear and progressive while Sport mode increases regenerative braking for one-pedal driving.
Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 comes standard, providing a full suite of active safety tech like pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and more. The latest Lexus Interface infotainment system brings a 14-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration and over-the-air updates.
Luxury and Practicality
Inside, the NX450h+ brings contemporary styling and premium materials expected of a Lexus. Available features like heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, ambient lighting and an advanced Mark Levinson audio system create a lavish environment. The rear seat is spacious enough for two adults to ride comfortably. Cargo capacity stands at 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 53.6 cubic feet with the 60/40-split folding seats lowered.
