I love the shape and the fine workmanship in this rose-cut Bohemian garnet brooch from about 1860.
The varied stone cuts and sizes, plus the movement of so many articulated elements, add to the appeal. It’s set in that low carat of gold known as garnet gold – it’s about four-carat, what you expect in this style of garnet jewel.
Examples like this are still quite affordable, given the complexity and skill involved in creating them. It’s good to know that a piece like this, which required so many hours of artisan skill, could not be reproduced today for a practical price.
In any case, these skills have been lost. In the world of antiques, where fakes have always thrived, that is very reassuring.
