In Saint Petersburg, early 1874, Vladimir Stasov arranged an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the Russian architect Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly in the previous year, at the age of 39. The event made a profound impression on Hartmann’s friend, Modest Mussorgski, who immediately set about composing his “Pictures at an Exhibition”. The work was written as a tribute to a lost friend; but in the mind of a composer of genius, it became a great deal more than that.
