"Dost thou not perceive
that Rome is but a wilderness of tigers?
Tigers must prey, and Rome affords no prey
but me and mine." (III, i, 54-57)
"Oh I have digged up dead men from their graves
and set them upright at their dear friends' doors." (V, i, 137-138)
We return to Shakespeare. This time, I'll explicate TITUS ANDRONICUS, the infamous early (bloody) revenge tragedy by The Bard. I'll decode the text for form and content and support my thesis for the play: although it contains the dint of a Senecan tragic drama, it actually serves to synthesize Anglo-Saxon/ Old English and Greco-Roman epic literary traditions, and is not a true tragedy in the sense of Shakespeare's own later tragic quartet. This is the perfect place to cover such a work, because the other Shakespearean plays we've covered serve as prerequisites, including: MACBETH, HAMLET, OTHELLO, KING LEAR, ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, RICHARD III, and JULIUS CAESAR, amongst others.
