3. SOUNDBITE (German) Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament:
"In the fragile international situation in which we are now, Europe has to play a central role and it can do that only if its feet are planted firmly on the ground. And our target is to plant Europe firmly in the ground. Europe is not in a good situation today. The European Union needs a new driving force, it needs renewed courage and it has to be convinced that today we can't react to globalisation with re-nationalisation."

5. SOUNDBITE (German) Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament:
"Italy isn't just a founding country, but above all it's a fundamental pillar of Europe, which supports Europe. It's the country with the most stable government in all the Mediterranean area. Italy is similar to France and Spain. It has a big responsibility in regards to relations with Africa. And it knows it, and it does so not just for itself but for all of Europe."

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament:
"Italy is a G7 country and deserves merit for all the efforts it makes, it deserves this respect, I want to say this explicitly today to acknowledge all the courageous steps Italy is taking. I want to express this respect to Italians and to their government, we would like Italy to get in good shape again, and there is agreement on this in Europe."

9. SOUNDBITE (German) Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament:
"And this morning as well, for what concerns the preparation of next week's European meeting, we agreed on all our views and topics, but one was particularly important and I would like to reinforce it and underline it here: we need stability and growth. The pact we signed in Europe is called the 'stability and growth pact'. We cannot focus only on stability but we need to focus also on growth because without growth there isn't stability in the long run, it's two sides of the same coin. In this sense our co-operation will continue and almost all my colleagues in the European Parliament agree on this."

11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Matteo Renzi, Italian Prime Minister:
"We must all work together for a different strategy on immigration, that goes through international co-operation, to help these people go back home, or even better not leave (their homes). At the same time, though, we must keep alive those values that tell us that if someone risks dying in the Mediterranean we must do everything to save this person, because before being politicians we are all human beings."

STORYLINE:
European Parliament President Martin Schulz on Friday said he would like Italy to regain a strong economy and that European countries needed to focus on growth as well as stability.
Schulz was speaking at a news conference in Rome after holding talks with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
Renzi in turn called for a different strategy to tackle the migration crisis saying policies needed to focus on returning refugees and migrants to their own countries and ensuring they were not forced to flee their homes.
Nevertheless, he said, "if someone risks dying in the Mediterranean we must do everything to save this person."
