This is a two step video where we addressed a problem with parking brake shoes that were binding inside the high hat area of the brake rotor; the other being worn brake pads showing cracks in the pad material. The repair was performed on a 2000 Lexus RX300. The rear parking brake design is commonly used on Toyota vehicles with a V6 engine. The binding shoes resulted in friction heat buildup inside the rear brake rotor accompanied with a noticeable burning smell. The problems were fixed by removing the rotor, cleaning up the brake shoes' backing plate contact surfaces, lubricating the contact surfaces to allow the shoes to "float" and replacing the worn brake pads with new Akebono (OEM quality) brake pads.
