Tinka Tinka Foundation swells with pride as it’s stepping into the 10th year of the Tinka Tinka India Awards. This year marks a decade of honouring the jail staff and inmates who through their art and talent, have chosen to express their stories.
The love and appreciation the award has received is especially evident through the large number of entries that the foundation was showered with this year. These are nominations from one such Jail, Central Jail, Bilaspur, where the inmates have wonderfully expressed their point of view with regard to VISITATION IN JAIL, the theme for this year. Through their art, they have expressed, how they truly feel.
The foundation especially wishes to extend its gratitude to S.S. Tigga, DIG, Chhattisgarh and Shri Khomesh Mandavi for their unwavering support and cooperation.
Tinka Tinka Foundation has curated two national awards exclusively for prisons, Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards. These are the only awards that are solely dedicated to inmates and jail staff. Started in 2015, this is the 10th year of celebration of creativity in jails, through these awards. Every year, a prison related subject is chosen as the main theme. This has helped inmates express their emotions and creative talents, enabling the award winners to even apply for remissions. In 2019, the theme was ‘Radio in Jails’, in 2020, the chosen theme was ‘Covid-19 and Prisons’ and in 2021, it was ‘Telephone in Jails’. More than 130 inmates and 45 jail staff have received Tinka Tinka India Awards between 2015 to 2023. Recommendations for these awards are sent by senior jail officials. Every year, the award ceremony is held on 9th of December, on the eve of International Human Rights Day.

Background: Vartika Nanda is an academic by profession, a journalist by vocation and a prison reformer by passion. She has used the best practices of journalism and academia for studying and contributing to prison reforms. As the founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, she has tirelessly worked for improving the conditions in India’s prisons, such as including the introduction of prison radio in District Jail, Agra, District Jail, Dehradun and the jails of Haryana. She has authored three books on prisons. Her Tinka Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts are exclusive podcasts dedicated to Indian prisons. She has done major projects with Tihar (Delhi), District Jail of Ghaziabad and Agra (Uttar Pradesh), jails of Madhya Pradesh and jails of Haryana. Her research on the “Study of the condition of women inmates and their children in Indian Prisons and their communication needs with special reference to Uttar Pradesh” has been evaluated as ‘outstanding’ by ICSSR in 2021. Her name has appeared in the Limca Book of Records twice, for her unique contribution to prison reforms. Her work was also taken due cognizance by the Supreme Court of India in 2018.
Vartika Nanda was conferred with the Stree Shakti Puraskar by the President of India in 2014 for her seminal contribution to women empowerment through media and literature. She is called the VOICE OF DELHI POLICE for being the official storyteller for Delhi Police for the podcast series- Kissa Khaki Ka, the only podcast series by any police department in India.
Currently, she heads the Department of Journalism, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University.
