Giovanni Grimani’s (1506 - 1593) collection of ancient art, long admired for its importance, drew visitors from across the world and made him an important ambassador for the appreciation of Venetian culture. In 1592, he bequeathed over 200 pieces of ancient sculpture to the Venetian republic to institute one of the first public museums in European history. ‘Domus Grimani 1594-2019’ at the Palazzo Grimani unites these extraordinary Greek and Roman sculptures in their original location for the first time in four centuries, simultaneously drawing attention to a state museum that is little known.
