Preparing and inflating your birth pool is an important step to take when planning a home birth. Here are some steps to follow to ensure your pool is properly prepared and inflated:
Choose a location: Before inflating your pool, choose a location that is flat and level, and away from any potential hazards or sharp objects. Ensure that the location has access to a water source and a drain.
Gather your supplies: Gather all the supplies you'll need to inflate and set up the pool, including the pool, an air pump, a drain pump, a hose, a tarp or floor liner, and any other accessories or tools recommended.
Inflate the pool, floor and seat: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to inflate the pool, ensuring that the top 2 chambers are fully inflated (we will show you how to fill the 3'rd chamber in a separate video) and that there are no leaks or damage to the material. Make sure all valves are closed tightly. It's important to ensure that the pool is sturdy and stable before filling it with water. You can purchase an air pump on our website, or use a standard air pump with correct adapters. Be sure never to over inflate your birth pool.
Add the floor liner: Place a groundsheet or tarp under the pool to protect the floor and prevent any punctures or damage to the pool.
Fill the pool with water: Once the pool is fully inflated, fill it with water using a hose connected to a tap or other water source. Use a thermometer to check the water temperature regularly and adjust the water flow as needed to maintain a temperature of around 36-37°C (96-99°F).
We recommend using a lead free hose to fill the birth pool. You can find them on our website.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your birth pool is properly prepared and inflated for a safe and comfortable home birth. It's always a good idea to consult with your midwife or healthcare provider for additional guidance and advice on preparing for a home birth, and to ensure that your pool is set up and used safely.
In the next video, we will show you the correct steps to inflate the top chamber for correct fitting of your birth pool liner.
