A visual summation of the concept of Digital Curation, with a focus on education.
Transcript:
How our digital practices can inspire the next generation of digital curators...
When you hear 'Curator' you might think of this...
[VERY Old Man!]
Or this!
Or this!
But what about DIGITAL Curation?
Well...It's similar, with a BIG difference!
'Digital Curation' is the "creation, management and use of digital materials...for a wide range of activities" (Beagrie, 2008, p.3)
Like a traditional curator; except all 'artefacts' are digital (Antonio et.al. 2012)
Content undergoes "value judgements" and reflections
(Deschaine et.al, 2015)
It’s an “active process” of sharing collections for collaboration (Antonio et.al. 2012).
Curators construct and share 'digital archives' using 'digital tools'...
There are three types of digital curation tools...(Antonio et.al. 2012)
Social Bookmarking
Blogs and Microblogs
Video and Image sharing
Most common digital curation tools used by educators
(Waters, 2014)
Why should students learn digital curation skills?
"It's a core competency for...participation in a digital culture"
(Mihailidis, 2016)
Curating Positive Digital Footprints =Future Employability
(Buchanan et.al, 2017)
They develop a "Personal Learning Network"
(Leirdal, 2015)
Maximises the positive impacts of internet exposure!
(Buchanan et.al, 2017)
Learning with familiar tools=Deeper Engagement
Reflective thinking, Critical analysis, Digital Literacy, Writing skills
Educators Role?
Personally, curating educational resources
Modelling effective curative practices
5 step curation process!
(Deschaine & Sharma, 2015)
1. COLLECTING
Locating topic-appropriate resources.
"Comparing new items... with existing exemplars"
(Deschaine & Sharma, 2015)
Cataloguing artefact's origins.
2. CATEGORIZING
Critically reflecting on whether to include artefacts
"Value Judgement"
3. CRITIQUING
"Discriminating, evaluating and judging the merits of each item" to ensure quality material is archived.
(Deschaine & Sharma, 2015)
4. CONCEPTUALISING
Reorganising artefacts to create new truths and perspectives...
5. CIRCULATING
Using tools
To share ideas
Across platforms
Showcasing collections through "multimedia... multidisciplinary and multitheoretical avenues".
For students, educators must select tools that are;
Functional
Reliable
Usable
Pleasurable
To maximise engagement!!
(Antonio et.al, 2012)
Final Thoughts?
If educators model curative skills and provide students with curative strategies, they develop critical thinking, reflective and digitally fluent individuals!
Integrating familiar curative tools into other lessons maximises student engagement and learning outcomes across the curriculum!
(Deschaine & Sharma, 2015)
These students are better prepared to achieve success in an increasingly digital society!
