The last leg of our sailing trip from San Jose Del Cabo to Ensenada
Mexico in June and July of 2017.
Crew member Mike recounts the events of our trip.
We left Turtle Bay on June 30, 2017, and headed for Bahia San Quintin. Poppy Star warned us that there was still going to be some chop but that we could still manage it without too much difficulty. We handled the chop, but it was no fun. We drove through the night and arrived at San Quintin on the evening of July 1. We had hoped to go ashore at the Hotel Santa Maria (formerly known as La Pinta, & the Desert Inn). Unfortunately the bay was so shallow we could not get any closer than 2 miles!L. We anchored long enough to make a great dinner and then decided to push on to Ensenada. After sailing all night (again!) we arrived in the late afternoon at Marina Coral in Ensenada. We put the always-reliable Chinook into her slip (F-43). We then took nice long showers. After that we ambled over to a nice little Bar/Café (just across from the marina office) and ate a little dinner, had a few drinks and just relaxed while surveying our beautiful surroundings.
The next morning (July 3) we woke up and our best cook, Colin, made us a wonderful bacon & egg breakfast. After breakfast, we began working on the boat; getting it ready to lock-up for our departure back to the States. No one is certain about how long it will be until one of the owners is able to return. By late morning we were shipshape enough for the Californios to depart back to their homes. They took an Uber to Tijuana where, because of very short pedestrian lines, they crossed quickly back into the States. Glenn and I were glad to hear that! Glenn and I continued with chores until late afternoon. We took the Chinook’s linens and towels to the marina’s laundromat. They washed just fine but we could not get them to dry!?! So we tried to wait at the little Café from the night before, but discovered that it was closed on Mondays. So we went up to the big fancy hotel restaurant, resigned to pay a lot for dinner. Surprise! Their dinner prices were very reasonable and much less than those we found at the Los Cabos Marina. An even happier surprise was their wine list, which had most of the great Baja wineries, including our favorite: Rincon de Guadalupe!! We had a bottle of red (vintage 2009) while we sat on their beautiful outdoor patio and enjoyed an after dinner smoke, while we continued to wait for our laundry to dry. Eventually we paid our dinner bill and folded the stuff that was dry and just hung up what was still damp. Then we called an Uber, which took us to Hussong's for only $2.50. Unfortunately it was Monday and Hussong's is closed on Mondays. We found a nice little craft beer joint around the corner and Glenn enjoyed another cigar and I watched Wimbledon highlights. We also watched fellow Yuman, Cain Velasquez, lose a fight. Like us, he ain't as young as he once was. Last but not least, we thought we’d go to one of our favorite taco stands, El Corralito. The tacos were great but at least twice as big as what they have been serving us for years. We waddled out and called another Uber and headed home to Chinook.
