Painted in 1926 by leading society portrait painter Ambrose McEvoy (1877-1927), this portrait depicts the renowned 20s socialite Comtesse Phyllis de Janzé (née Boyd) and is a highlight of our Masterpiece display.
Through composition and colour, McEvoy has perfectly captured Phyllis’ flair and confidence
Phyllis’s glamorous life and sparkling personality has been documented by a plethora of her contemporaries including Barbara Cartland who described her in her heyday:
‘She was the first society woman to wear a very short skirt, and she has a mysterious, haunting beauty, with high cheekbones and aquamarine eyes.’
