(10 Mar 2019) CHAMPIONS PARADE MARKS FINALE OF RIO CARNIVAL
The Brazilian samba school which paid tribute to a Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman killed last year was named the winner of the "Champions Parade" at the Rio carnival on Sunday (10 MARCH 2019).
Mangueira, one of the oldest and most traditional samba schools in the city, received the title "Champion of the Carnival."
Thousands attended the parade at the Sambadrome to see the six best samba schools perform.
Mangueira's theme was Brazil's untold history, the unsung heroes, including councilwoman Marielle Franco, who was shot to death on March 14, last year.
Her killing set off a wave of demonstrations, but police are yet to name any suspects.
