Portland’s parks are a point of pride for the city. Over the course of three days local third graders did their part to keep a park in their neighborhood healthy for years to come.
Sitton Elementary third graders in St. Johns, North Portland planted around 100 native shrubs, ferns, perennials and groundcover in Pier Park.
The goal is to plant native plants in the park to help the Columbia Slough watershed. It was made possible through Friends of Pier Park’s Community Watershed Stewardship Program grant from the City of Portland.
Native plants have a more extensive and deeper root system than non-native species, according to Friends of Pier Park. The third-grade students not only planted to improve soil and water quality, but also to learn about being a steward to their environment.
