In terms of film fundamentals, The Shining should be one of the worst movies ever made, and Jack Nicholson's performance should have failed miserably. He mugs his whole way through, and the movie has no hero, an unlikable child, and a frightening and unsympathetic heroine. But yet somehow, people, including me, consider The Shining to be the scariest movie ever made. I never quite understood how it worked, until I was working on the last video about Deepfakes which had a clip where Jim Carrey replaced Jack Nicholson in this movie. Something clicked with me then, and after that, I think I got what Stanley Kubrick and Nicholson were doing the whole time. And I've never seen the movie explained this way, so let's talk about it.

I'm also reading scripts and books if you want to hire me, for a dollar a page. It's a great way to support the channel also! Message me on Facebook or Twitter. Sometimes Twitter doesn't show me the message for a few days though, so tagging me or replying to a tweet might help. Thanks!
