On December 9, 2024, Mount Kanlaon, an active volcano located between the central provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Philippines, erupted for the second time this year. The eruption sent a massive ash cloud soaring up to 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) into the sky, impacting nearby towns and communities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level to 3, indicating an increased risk of lava flows and further volcanic activity.
This eruption follows a pattern of frequent activity from Mt. Kanlaon, which is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines, a region known for its high seismic activity due to its location within the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The eruption has led to widespread ashfall, covering homes, roads, and buildings in the affected areas. The Philippine Red Cross released drone footage showing the extent of the damage.
Authorities have begun evacuating residents from the volcano’s immediate vicinity, with over 54,000 people at risk of the ongoing eruption. The Philippine government has issued advisories for local governments to prepare for potential further evacuations as the situation develops
