Tiamat, the powerful Goddess of Babylonian and Sumerian mythologies, is a fascinating figure who plays an important role in the creation of the universe and the gods themselves.
Although commonly associated with a Sea Serpent or a Dragon, there are no clear texts confirming this connection in her representations. Initially, in a time when female deities were worshipped in their various facets, Tiamat was venerated as the mother of the elements and the creator of all that exists. The gods were considered her sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons, demonstrating her importance and power in the divine pantheon. Tiamat's story can be found in the Babylonian epic Enuma Elish, dated around one thousand nine hundred to one thousand six hundred before Christ. This epic was chanted in honor of Marduk, the main Babylonian god, and celebrated the foundation of the world and the city of Babylon itself, considered the center of the universe at that time. The narrative begins with the aquatic chaos, represented by Apsu, the fresh water that gives rise to rivers and streams, and Tiamat, the sea or salt waters, personified in the form of a dragon. These deities unite their powers to create the universe and the gods.
