Orleans, the invincible city
It is the most striking event in the Hundred Year War. Between 1428 and 1429, Orleans was subject to a violent and pitiless siege.
Hidden away in the extraordinary walled enclosure, for 7 months, the French resisted an English army that was bent on conquering this strategic city on the Loire River.
Thanks to the genius of its architects, the city of Orleans had excellent defences: impenetrable city walls, the finest artillery, and a vast bridge that would become a major stake in a merciless battle.
For months on end, the 30 000 inhabitants of Orleans resisted whilst awaiting reinforcements.
Led by Joan of Arc, the French managed to beat the English and thus change the course of a war that had lasted almost 100 years.
What happened during this siege? Frontal attacks, encirclement… What was the strategy of the besieging English army?
How did the city of Orleans manage to resist for 7 months before being delivered from the English in just a few days by Joan of Arc, the liberator of Orleans?
