Lily is a subadult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found hanging on a tree stump in a backyard.
Lily is skinny, has some fungal infections with some fur loss on her face and head, and she's got a smallish hole on one wing and a huge slash hole on her other wing.
The small hole will heal with no problem.
The larger slash is about 12 cms long and will heal only if the trailing edge end of it remains intact. If she loses the little bridge of skin on the back edge of the wing, the hole will become a flapping slit and will be unable to unite. Holes need to have a continuous intact edge more or less in a circle or oval, in order to heal from the outside in.
The fungal infections will heal with medication.
So Lily's survival hinges on keeping the long slash in her membrane intact. It looks like she has a nice healthy bridge of membrane between the damage and the trailing edge of the wing so I am feeling hopeful about her survival, however it's early days.
Update:
Lily has survived her first 30 hours and is looking good. She is eating, but needs encouragement. It's all still really new and scary for her.
Further update: Lily was released in March 2019. When she went into the release aviary and initially failed her test flight. Finally after a month in the release aviary she was flying and after building up flight fitness was able to be released.
