My fellow Automotive Fanatics, do you own a Tesla Model Y and absolutely HATE the ride quality? The Y Performance by nature, rides a bit harsher than the standards Model Y. You can though, improve this by doing the following:
- run a completely different tire size setup
The Model Y Performance comes with 255/35/21 tires up front on a 9.5” wide rim and 275/35/21 tires in the rear on a 10.5” rim. The result is a harsh ride because the tire is being “stretched” on the stock rim and offering very little “air” to drive on. The tires also look terrible because it appears as though you’re driving on rubberbands.
Today’s video, I will show you what I did to drastically improve my ride quality.
***NOTE***
This tire change is not a cheap option, but 100% worth it in the long run.
I went and purchased a pair of matching Michelin 295/35/21” tire and installed it on the REAR rims. With the OEM 275/35/21 tires, I placed those on the front rims. The results are a dramatic improvement in ride quality and comfort. The severe “jolts” you felt from the original sized tires, are no longer as jarring. You’ll also notice a quieter ride and the tires will no longer look like they are stretched on the rims. Another benefit, better handling grip because you’ll have a larger contact patch.
The only negatives in this change:
- cost for new tires
- potentially reduced driving range
