On January 3, 1959, President Eisenhower signed the official declaration making Alaska the 49th state. Covering over 371 million acres, the “Land of the Midnight Sun” contains one-fifth the total landmass of the Lower 48, more than half of America’s national park land, more that 80% of America’s national wildlife refuge land, more world-class fishing water than a person could possibly fish in a lifetime.
