LEAD IN :
This year is the 70th anniversary of the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica in Spain.
On 26 April, 1937 Guernica was targeted for aerial bombing during the Spanish Civil War.
In response to the atrocity artist Pablo Picasso painted his famous work by the same name, "Guernica".
But controversy now surrounds where this work should be kept.
STORYLINE :
The National Museum of Art Reina Sofia in the Spanish capital Madrid contains many of the world's most influential paintings and art works of modern times.
One painting, however, is attracting a good deal of attention at the moment.
"Guernica", painted by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, is an iconic anti-war image illustrating the brutality and terror of violence.
On 26 April 1937 German and Italian fighter planes backing the fascist forces of General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War levelled this historic Basque town.
News reports spoke of the village in flames and thousands dead. The attack on Guernica was to become the first widely reported attack on innocent civilians in modern warfare.
Myths and misinformation have shrouded the bombing from the outset, starting with the death toll, which historians have been gradually revising downward for decades.
Pablo Picasso's assimilation of the horrific events in Guernica were projected into an immense black and white oil painting. The tortured figures of people and animals reflected a scene of suffering and despair.
The painting itself has not escaped its own controversy.
