Peace Process ‘Impossible with Terrorism Supporters’
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says it would be impossible for the government to continue the peace process with groups who support terrorism. Meanwhile, some NATO officials have stated the in support for Turkey in its fight against ‘terrorism’. Turkey requested the extraordinary meeting held on Tuesday to discuss the recent attack by ISIS and the outlawed PKK. Turkey started an operation against the ISIS and the PKK after a series of attacks that began last week. Several police officers and soldiers have been killed. Over 1 thousand people have been detained with suspected links to ISIS and the PKK.
Obama’s African Union Speech
US President Barack Obama has addressed the African Union in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. He is the first US president to do so. Obama said the Union has an ‘urgent task’ to create jobs. He also urged the Union to step in when African leaders violate the term limits of their countries. He said the continent would attract more foreign investment if nations were to work towards this goal. During his five-day visit to Kenya and Ethiopia, Obama also emphasised the need to improve human rights in the countries.
Gaddafi’s Son Sentenced to Death
The son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been sentenced to death by firing squad. Saif al Islam and another member of Gaddafi’s government were accused of war crimes and suppressing protests during the revolution in Libya. Gaddafi was deposed in 2011. The trial had begun in April 2014 before the current conflict.
2 Soldiers Killed in Bomb Attack
A bomb attack in the village of Sitra in Bahrain has killed two policeman and wounded another. The interior ministry has referred to the bombing as a ‘terror attack.’ The government says security forces have recently seized the explosives used in the bombing. T31hey say the explosives were smuggled from Iran.
