Most of my career was spent working for American tech companies, and I’ve spent a lot of time in the USA over the years. In the States, there's sometimes a bit of tunnel vision about freedom - and freedom of speech in particular - as though it’s a uniquely American thing. But here in the UK, the 1998 Human Rights Act locks in the right to freedom of speech, too. Though in Britain, we balance this freedom with a sense of responsibility. Legally, the red line is that you can say whatever you want, so long as you’re not promoting criminal activity or spreading hate. And that’s precisely the line that Elon Musk has been crossing regularly in recent times, attempting to sow violent discord in the UK through his tweets, without taking any personal risk or responsibility. If it has the will, the UK government, and its beefed up Online Safety Act, can change that situation, and large corporate fines or even the threat of detention might concentrate the mind of the man-baby billionaire, Space Karen.
I appreciate all of you who share my videos with friends and social media. Together, let's help put pressure on this centrist government to be more radical in their plans to tackle poverty, public ownership of public utilities, employment rights, an ever closer relationship with the EU, and the redistribution of wealth through fairer taxation.
Unlike those weird new right wing TV "news" channels and ultra right wing "think tanks" that are always on mainstream telly, Truth To Power receives no hidden funding. Or any funding, come to that, except YouTube partner programme advertising revenue, and YouTube $uperthanks donations from viewers.
As well as sharing the videos on social media and with your friends, hitting the Like button and subscribing to the channel is also really helpful, as it tells YouTube to offer these videos to a wider audience.
