Oral argument began this week in a case involving a Catholic charity in Wisconsin. At issue, whether the Catholic Charities Bureau operated by the Diocese of Superior is actually religious and therefore exempt from certain state taxes. Vice President and Senior Counsel of the Becket Fund, Eric Rassbach, joins to tell us more about it and why some argue the group should not be considered religious. Rassbach shares more about Catholic Charities Bureau, what the group does and who is serves. In Wisconsin, religious non-profits are exempt from paying into their state's unemployment programs, therefore allowing them to be a part of other unemployment compensation programs. That said, Rassbach explains what the benefit of that is and why Catholic Charities Bureau wants to do so. He discusses the impact it would have if Catholic Charities Bureau is not deemed religious and how significant that could be. Rassbach fills us in on what's next in the case.
