(16 May 2016) Afghanistan's Chief Executive, Abdullah Abdullah, was welcomed in Beijing on Monday by China's Premier Li Keqiang at the beginning of an official visit designed to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides held talks at the Great Hall of the People in the heart of the Chinese capital and witnessed the signing of agreements on economic and trade cooperation by ministers of foreign affairs and commerce from both countries.
Abdullah is the second most senior figure in the Afghan government, after the President Ashraf Ghani and will be meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.
China is amongst the four countries, along with Pakistan, the United States and Afghanistan itself, that currently participate in the four-party talks trying to influence the Taliban towards a peace deal for the central Asian country.
Abdullah's visit came amid unrest at home in Afghanistan as police blocked off roads in central Kabul to halt the advance of tens of thousands of minority Hazara demonstrators, who are protesting against perceived discrimination in the fractious country.
