The gun that finally stopped German heavy tanks of World War Two, the famous British 17-pounder could punch a hole through the thickest armour and proved a match for Tigers and Panthers. The 3-inch gun was used as field artillery, an anti-tank and tank gun, most famously in the British variant of the American M4 Sherman known as the Firefly. Produced as a stopgap while the British Challenger and Cromwell tanks were under development, around 2,100 Fireflies were manufactured by the war’s end. Although similar the Firefly and the American M4A3E8 or Easy Eight were configured differently. This footage of a 17-pounder in action was taken by me at The War and Peace Revival show 2016.
