MaREI is the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine coordinated by the Environmental Research Institute at University College Cork.
Our mission centres on undertaking excellent research in the energy transition, climate action and the blue economy, and translating the scientific results into insights that we use to inform policy, support industry, and empower society.
Climate change means temperatures are increasing, sea levels are rising, and patterns of precipitation are shifting, and these changes are projected to intensify into the future.
Adaptation to climate change is urgently required to offset some of these adverse impacts, and make our towns, cities and communities more climate resilient.
MaREI researchers at UCC are at the forefront of collaborative and innovative approaches linked to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction – resulting in novel and impactful research which provides an evidence base for supporting climate action and the development of a climate resilient society, all the while working at local, national and European levels.
Our engaged research approach supports decision-makers to effectively manage more frequent and extreme hazards like flooding, heatwaves, and multi-risk events, through for example, forecasting and early warning systems, nature-based solutions, water and transport infrastructure operation, and bespoke education and training programmes.
MaREI coordinates Climate Ireland which is recognised as a key national bridging resource between climate research and climate adaptation policy and planning in Ireland.
Climate Ireland is a one-stop web-based resource of climate and adaptation information for Ireland and involves the development and delivery of bespoke training activities, that directly support decision-makers to develop and deliver local and sectoral adaptation policies.
MaREI researchers at UCC drafted Ireland’s planning guidelines for climate adaptation, and are working directly with regional, local, and sectoral representatives in advancing climate adaptation policy and planning in Ireland.
Our research is driven by, and contributes to international, European and national policies on climate change, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
