For any copyright, please send me a message. Police are investigating a serious crash between two lorries which has closed part of the M1. Images of the crash site showed one of the lorry cabs was severely damaged in the collision, while the the other had gone through an embankment. A major recovery operation is under way, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways between junction 12 at Flitwick and junction 13 near Milton Keynes were closed after the collision on Saturday, Highways England said. The southbound carriageway is expected to be closed for "several hours", it said. The northbound carriageway has since reopened. Drivers are being urged to find alternative routes after the HGVs collided on the southbound carriageway shortly after 6.30am. Bedfordshire Police tweeted they were at the scene of a "serious collision". An air ambulance also attended. The Highways Agency said on its website: "Bedfordshire Police are conducting collision investigations due to the seriousness of the incident. "Complex recovery will then take place. "The road is likely to remain closed throughout the afternoon, however, at this time there is no estimate for when the road will reopen." The southbound road closure was expected to affect those returning home from their winter holidays, as well as football supporters heading to the Aston Villa FA Cup match at Fulham.
