Accessible design was the most frequent topic in comments we received, and many people assumed that we had accessibility in mind when we designed Momnt Mugs. But that’s not exactly true, and I feel it’s right to be honest about this topic, especially since I’m sure the accessibility community has many snake-oil products marketed to them as cure-alls already. So to be up-front, we honestly did not have accessibility in mind when we designed Momnt Mugs. We just found this to be the most stable and comfortable grip in general out of the many prototypes that we tested.
However, the highlight of our Momnt Mugs project so far has been hearing from so many people with arthritis, shaky hands, and other hand disabilities who have said our mug has made a positive impact on their lives. In fact, our first customer ever gave a Momnt Mug to her husband who has shaky hands related to Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome, and after he used it and had a steadier grip with more coffee compared to his traditional mug, she told us “what a joy for something seemingly small.”
Maybe I’m just a bad salesman and I should just say that yes, it’s great for accessibility and all grips, but I’d rather be honest because I know it’s not a one-mug-fits-all situation. People who typically hold mugs with two or three fingers through the loop and use their other finger(s) to press against the outside of the handle to keep the mug elevated will have a good chance of liking our design, but there have been people both with and without hand disabilities who have said that this style grip is not for them. I’d rather be honest about it and get constructive feedback while we work to improve Momnt Mugs even more, and we will certainly be thinking about accessible design moving forward.
