The 2016 Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Parade started on time at 4:30 pm at the Elbo Room corner of Valencia St & Sycamore Streets with high wind energy from BJ's Boppers who soon left the hundreds gathered for the 2nd line parade for The Chapel the Trashkan Marchink Band along with the Brass Mafia and elements of the Stanford Marching Band North Beach Brass Band and many other guests. The parade initially surprised the SFPD Mission Captain Daniel Perea which concentrated across the street from their station at 17th & Valencia Before departing down Valencia to 15th then Julian and Division before blocking traffic briefly in front of the Brick and Mortar at 1710 Mission .
Jason Perkins, one of the event organizers, says the Parish Entertainment Group began organizing the annual Mardi Gras parade five years ago to give San Francisco an authentic New Orleans experience.“We wanted to do an actual Mardi Gras event that mirrored what you’d see in a genuine parade,” Perkins says. He pointed out to the SF Chronicle reporter that the parade used to take place in Hayes Valley, but gentrification has taken away some of the neighborhood’s charm.
