People have long been fascinated by pirates, way before Johnny Depp chewed scenery as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. The seafaring, swashbuckling, rum-drinking lifestyle is undoubtedly romantic, and certainly romanticized. There are handsome, heroic pirates (think Cary Elwes as Dread Pirate Roberts in "The Princess Bride") and rough, "salty dog" stereotypes popular at Halloween (think Captain Hook's men in "Hook," or Robert Newton in "Treasure Island"). Both, however, are common depictions of male pirates, but what about the ladies? What were female pirates like? This is the messed-up history of the most notorious female pirates in history.
