STORYLINE:
China's special envoy to the Middle East, Zhai Jun, met Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad in Damascus on Saturday.
Syrian state media did not give further details about the meeting, adding that the Chinese official also met Syrian President Bashar Assad.
China has been a main backer of Assad's government and has used its veto power at the U.N. Security Council over the past years to block draft resolutions against Damascus.
Syria’s state news agency SANA said China called for the lifting of Western sanctions last year imposed on Damascus after the conflict - that has killed about half a million people - started in 2011.
