The “endless torrent” of unnecessary train announcements is to be curbed, Grant Shapps has announced.
The Transport Secretary vowed to make the journeys of passengers “a little more peaceful” by working with rail operators to identify and axe dull or repetitious announcements.
Messages in the firing line include reminders for passengers to have their tickets ready when leaving the station and “contradictory calls” to keep their volume down while “on-board announcements blare out”.
There are also plans to impose a limit on how frequently the remaining announcements will be heard.
Ministers have been talking about addressing the issue for almost a decade, as commuters became increasingly weary of announcements as regular as every few minutes.
